| Audition
[formerly Syntrillium Cool Edit] is an optional third-party editing
program that can be used with DAD. The
Audition program is written and supported by Adobe
Systems Incorporated. This program provides advanced multi-track
capabilities for complex production and editing. An additional purchase option for Audition/Cool Edit adds the ability to export completed audio projects directly into DAD for immediate availability. This option is available from ENCO Systems Inc. |
|
| NOTE:
The Audition / Cool Edit program offers extensive on-line help from within
the program itself.
This document covers the integration of the CoolDAD filter for Audition / Cool Edit and DAD. |
The CoolDAD interface package is compatible with Cool Edit
Pro 1.2, Cool Edit Pro 1.2a, Cool Edit 2000, Cool Edit Pro 2.0+, Adobe
Audition 1.0 through 3.0
Adobe Audition 4 - which is part of the Creative Suite 5.5 does NOT support use of ANY filter. This means that the CoolDAD filter will not work with the Adobe 4 / 5.5.
|
|
Important: Adobe Audition must be installed first and the Audition application should be run at least once prior to installing the CoolDAD package. |
|
After Adobe has been installed and run, you can run the SetupCoolDAD
installer package. Once
the CoolDAD package has been installed, a folder will be created within
the ENCO Applications desktop folder. The CoolDAD Apps folder contains
shortcuts to this document, CoolDAD.INI, an annotated sample CoolDAD.ini,
the CoolDAD readme file, and ResetParams (allowing Cool Edit users to
reset their parameters).
The CoolDAD.INI file is saved within the C:\Program Files\ENCO CoolDAD directory. |

| Once a multi-track production session has been completed, users can right click on each track selecting ‘All waves in track’ for each track they wish to export. Highlight the area you wish to mix down and select ‘Mix Down’ then ‘Selected waves’ from the EDIT dropdown menu. This will mix all the selected audio elements down to a single stereo audio file. | ![]() |
| From
the newly mixed down stereo file, highlight the section of the waveform
that is to be exported into DAD. From
the File menu, users can select either ‘Save Selection’ to save the
highlighted section or select ‘Save As’ to save the entire mixed file.
A 'Save Selection'
shortcut exists on the toolbar as a floppy disk icon.
Markers such as Intro Talk Time and Segue can be set from this screen and imported directly. This ability is covered later in this section.
|

| This opens the gen Checking
the box ‘Save extra non-audio information’ will ensure data such as
cues and any cut information entered from within Audition / Cool Edit
transfers properly into DAD. Specify
the desired cut number in the file save dialog box, i.e. '89000.WAV'. If
you're working with an existing DAD cut, you will be offered the existing
filename (which can be changed if you
wish to save to a different cut number.) If you specify a short title instead, i.e. 'MYCUT.WAV', CoolDAD will automatically assign the next available cut number based on your CoolDAD.ini settings and 'MYCUT' will be entered into the TITLE field of the CUT PROPERTIES dialog that follows. |
![]() |
NOTE: Multiple user cut ranges are supported. Users may enter a name (i.e. ‘John’, ‘Tom’, etc.) in the File name field corresponding to a pre-configured cut range. CoolDAD will then assign the next available cut number within that range.
See CoolDAD Configuration at the end of this manual for setup information pertaining to this feature.
| To begin the export, press SAVE.
The Cut Properties window allows one to enter or
modify the Title and other necessary information.
Pressing SAVE will transfer the cut information into the DAD
Library. The cut number will automatically be entered based on the CoolDAD.INI parameters or on the specific cut number entered in the previous dialog. Users should note that the cut number field is grayed out and cannot be changed. Attempts to do so are ignored when the “Save” button is pressed. |
![]() |
| NOTE: Production personnel have the option to change the default settings before saving. By pressing the OPTIONS button from within the ‘Save Waveform Selection As’ screen, one can change the final location of the audio file to a different drive letter. Users also have the option to set the exported audio format. One can select either Linear PCM16 or MPEG Layer 2 with a user-selectable bit rate. |
|
| Dealing with Cut Security This is defined in the
COOLDAD.INI file using the line: Username =
Entering the DAD Security
user name will assign the rights for the user given.
DAD Security and CutSecurity is covered in here. |
|
| Advanced Export Features One of the benefits of using the optional export from Audition / Cool Edit to DAD is the ability to encode markers for Talk Time and Segues. A Producer can also embed cut information such as Title, Outcue and other database fields along with copy information. |
|
| Embedding
markers Within Audition / Cool
Edit, a user can define a cue in the cue list as a marker that can be
exported into DAD.
To do this, place the PlayHead at the location
you wish the marker to be. From the Audition / Cool Edit toolbar select
the cues button. This opens the ‘Cue List / Ranges’ window.
Press ADD and enter the name of the marker in the Label field.
The supported cues are Head, Tail, Segue, Intro, Hooks, Sec and
Ter. To set either Segue or Hook cues, users should highlight the entire area they wish the markers to be set. Using this method, the Head marker will be placed at the beginning of the highlighted area with the Tail marker at the end. |

| Cut
Information Audition / Cool Edit allows cut information to be exported directly into DAD. A
Producer can either press the Wave Information button from the toolbar or use
the CTRL+I keystroke to open the information screen.
When a user selects the Radio Industry option the following fields are
exported into DAD.

| Copy information can also be entered into the Copy field of this screen. The copy information will be displayed when used with the Script Machine or AirPlay. |
Production personnel can also export an audio cut from DAD
directly into Audition / Cool Edit. In this method, DAD can be configured to
allow users to select audio files from the Library and use the EDIT button to
open the cut in Audition / Cool Edit. The EDIT button can also have its
description changed to properly depict either the DAD Editor or an external
editor. The DAD Editor will always be available and toggles between both the DAD
Editor and the external editor when held down for two seconds.
One must edit the workstations configuration file to allow
the selected audio cut to be opened in Audition / Cool Edit. The the following
line in the [LIBRARY] section of the CFI file specifies the path of the program
to be used as DAD’s external editor:
EDIT=C:\Program Files\coolpro2\CoolPro2.exe %1
EDIT=C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Adobe Audition 2.0\Audition.exe /KEEPDEFAULTFMT %1
The line: EDIT_DESC
in the same section of ;the CFI file allows users to set the text of the EDIT
button. This line must come after the EDIT= entry and is limited to six
characters. For example:
EDIT_DESC=Cool2k
or
EDIT_DESC=Adobe
This now allows a user to select an audio file, press the
EDIT button, wait for the button to display “Cool2k”, release the button,
and the cut opens in Audition / Cool Edit. The
EDIT button remains in the "Cool2k" mode until the user once again
toggles it back.
Large Audio Files
Users should note that large audio files could take time
to export into Audition / Cool Edit. When one imports an hour-long recording
into Audition / Cool Edit, for instance, a ‘Large audio file’ window will
display. This allows users to select a segment of audio to edit so the entire
file does not have to be imported.
| From
this display, use the time bar to select the starting time for the segment of
audio. This time may be expressed as
an offset from the beginning of the audio file or as the time of day, depending
on the configuration settings. Enter
the length for this segment in the Length field.
Selecting ‘Edit Specified section only’ will edit the segment of
audio located at the set time for the set length. If one prefers to import the
entire audio file, select the ‘Edit entire file anyway’ button. |
|
Users can configure the size limit for large files within
the COOLDAD.INI file.
The line: LargeCutLimit
sets a maximum cut length in minutes before the ‘Large audio file’ window
opens.
Users can configure the export
for their needs. These settings defined within the CoolDAD.INI file found within
the C:\Program
Files\ENCO CoolDAD directory. These options are as
follows:
