This is information regarding the release of the ENCO Systems DAD486x version 5.x software, the DAD 5.x upgrade procedure and the SX25-32v audio driver. This new software contains many new features as well as numerous refinements to existing features. This document will highlight the various changes and outline their use. See the README.6 file for information on the current version 6.x DAD. From time to time the DAD utilities for database rebuilding, security, etc. change. These changes are now built into the self extracting update file (DAD62k.exe for example). ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ DAD 5.0 NEW FEATURES ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ SECURITY A Security System has now been implemented, providing the ability to create and maintain various levels of system access capabilities and protection for every system user. The Security System is accessed via DOS at the \DAD prompt with the "SECURE" command. The default system password, which is issued by ENCO at the time of purchase or upgrade, is "DAD486x". Once that entrance is accomplished, the ability exists to enable or disable security, change passwords, and to add, copy, or delete specific Users. Each User's access may be limited to specific DAD functions. These may be modified on an ongoing basis as situations dictate or as operators become more experienced. The layout of the Security Screen is intuitive. However note that features in lower case indicate that there are further layers of assignment available, while features in upper case indicate no further layers exist below this feature. RECORDERS There are now four virtual Recording Machines available within DAD, each independently configurable for mono/stereo, sampling rate, compression format, etc., and each accessible either manually or in the Automatic Recording mode. This permits multiple independent simultaneous recordings on a single Workstation (if equipped with multiple record DSP boards). Refinements include a more powerful APPEND mode, the ability to enter monitor mode without loading a cut (for setting levels) and automatic checking for valid drive specifications before recording. AUTOMATIC RECORDING The Automatic Recording screen now features programmable day of the week recording as well as selectable GPI input and threshold level activation. Also, the Auto-Record enabled/disabled status is remembered and set to the current value should the program be restarted. EDITOR - FADE & SEGUE POINTERS The Cut & Paste Assembly Editor now includes separate and independent pointers for Fade and Segue defaults. Fade Pointers set locations for completion of a fade in (left pointer) or initiation of a fade out (right pointer) within any individual Cut. Segue Pointers set locations for completion of a segue from a previous Cut (left pointer) and initiation of a segue into a following Cut (right pointer). Note that these cue points are stored with each individual cut within the Library. When a segue (of duration 0.0) is programmed within any Playlist, the transition points default to those set within the Editor. If the Segue Editor is used to modify transitions, it does so only for execution within that Playlist, and does not change the default settings. SEGUE DEFAULTS Playlists may now be imported with a specified segue transition duration assigned to every segue. This is done by selecting the SETUP/CUE AND AUTOMATION DEFAULTS/DEFAULT AUTOMATION TYPE as SEGUE and entering the desired transition duration in the adjacent window. This setting will be used for any playlist imported after being set and for any single cut added or inserted manually. Any segue may still be "fine tuned" using the segue editor if desired. SEGUE EDITOR NEXT/PREVIOUS SELECTION The Segue Editor now contains NEXT and PREV buttons allowing you to step from cut to cut within a playlist without leaving the segue editor. DUAL MINI-ARRAY PANELS There are now two different sets of Mini-Array Panels which may be programmed independently and used simultaneously. LIBRARY STRUCTURE The display features of the Library have been optimized to allow much quicker access to Library data. Entering the Library is now almost instantaneous even for extremely large Librarys. In addition, the GROUPS pop-up is now automatically sorted by alphabetical order any time a group is added, edited or deleted. Also, the Library now includes a "Switcher" field. This may be used in conjunction with a user programmable output switcher file to issue specific control commands to audio switching/mixing devices (see INPUT/OUTPUT SWITCHER CONTROL). This allows individual DAD cuts to have a final routing address attached for automatic execution in any of several modes. PLAYLIST DATABASE Playlist names now include up to 20 character descriptions and up to four 20 character lines of additional information if desired. Dates of creation/modification and last execution are also tracked and displayed. PLAYLIST CREATION In addition to the ADD and INSERT buttons within the Playlist screen, cuts may now be added or inserted directly into playlists using the numeric keypad. Typing a 5 digit cut number then pressing Enter will add the cut to the end of the list while typing the cut number and using the keypad's + key will insert it to the top of the list. PLAYLIST TIME REFERENCE & INFORMATION If an imported Playlist includes time of occurrence references, this information can now be displayed in a window located at the left of the Playlist Bar. If no time information exists, the position # of the cut is diplayed instead. This can be helpful if operators manually scroll through a Playlist, permitting them to easily locate and return to a scheduled location. SUPERPLAY The "N" (Next) Button on each Player is now active during playback. Touching it will initiate a Segue to the next programmed event, with a transition type and duration specified by DAD.CFG file parameters (see DAD.CFG FILE CHANGES below). Superplay may also be issued via the DAD.GPI file as "SUPERPLAY PBK1" (or any PBK machine). This has the added feature of performing a simple "PLAY" command if the playback machine is stopped. REPRODUCER PACING BAR The Playlist Bar on each Reproducer now becomes a Pacing Indicator during Play, functioning like a bargraph display to show percentage of completion of the active Cut. If the next event will be executed automatically, the bar is Yellow. If the event in process is the end of an automated sequence, the bar is Red indicating that manual intervention will be required. CHANNEL ASSIGNMENTS The Channel Assignment control panel within Setup has been revised to cover all potential modes of operation, including Audition & Program assignment (see PROGRAMMABLE GPO SUPPORT) and predetermination of whether individual outputs can be shared by multiple virtual machines and under what circumstances. This assignment panel may be thought of as a "patch bay" between the virtual machines within DAD and the physical input and output connectors on the back of the unit. Setting Channel Asssignments should be approached as follows: 1) Select a machine to "patch" from the Machine list; 2) For each machine selected, a list of possible Events appears 3) For each such event, choose a Primary (1st choice) audio board and output (Left, Stereo or Right). 4) If you want to allow an event to move to another board if the primary is in use by another machine, select the 1st Alternate, 2nd Alternate and 3rd Alternate settings as desired. 5) Continue until EACH event of EACH machine has been "Patched". The status of the "Sharable" switches determines whether a specific event is allowed to occur on a DSP board that is already performing another audio event. Setting these to "Y" will allow you to get "double duty" out of a DSP board but there are limitations: 1) If your Library has a mixture of formats and sample rates you would generally want these all set to "N" unless you knew exactly which cuts would play in which machines. 2) If any of your DSP boards are not able to support dual audio functions at the sample rates and formats within your Library, you would not want to allow those boards to be shared. 3) If you want each event to occur on an indepentent output (separate fader on mixing console) you do not want any events to share a board. Proper setup of channel assignments is essential to correct operation. The install utility will try read your current setups and make the appropriate selections, however these new settings may not be optimum for all possible circumstances. If in doubt, set Sharabe to "N". PROGRAMMABLE GPO SUPPORT All 8 GPO relays may now be addressed by command cuts using the CLOSE, OPEN and PULSE DCL commands. In addition, DAD 5.0 ships with a support file named \DAD\FILES\DAD.GPO which may be used to program any relays to follow playback status parameters. This files contains up to 20 lines corresponding to the PROGRAM, AUDITION, SECONDARY CUE, TERTIARY CUE, and STOP status of each of the workstation's DSP BOARDS. On each line of this file, add a C (for command) then an appropriate OPEN, CLOSE or PULSE command or use an S (for serial) and the character string you want issued when the corresponding status variable is true (all commands and strings must be inclosed in " "). The default GPO file supplied will operate the GPO relays as pre-5.0 DAD software did. INPUT/OUTPUT SWITCHER CONTROL Each of the four record machines may control its own input routing switcher (or individual bus of a large switching matrix). This is accomplished using 4 support files: \DAD\FILES\DAD.IS1, DAD.IS2, DAD.IS3 and DAD.IS4 which correspond to virtual machines REC1 thru REC4. These files may contain any number of entries and each may be a DCL, a serial string or both. A similar arrangement is used for output switcher control. In this case there is only one support file: DAD.OS1 which contains entries that represent a "look up table" for mneumonic strings entered in the Library Switcher field. Use of these features is somewhat technical and we suggest you consult ENCO Tech Support for additional information. NOTE: The UPGRADE5 utility will create a DAD.IS1 programmed to control a CONEX AS101 input switcher by default. If you are using any other switcher or want REC2 - REC4 to control switchers, you must copy/modify this file as is necessary. DAD COMMAND LANGUAGE UPDATES There are several new DCL commands: EXECUTE Command used by GPI and serial control to "play" a command cut. SEND TEXT 'string' Sends desired character string out serial port assigned in DAD.CFG SEND TEXT Sends contents of file out serial port assigned in DAD.CFG SUPERPLAY Issues PLAY if not playing; initiates a seque to following cut if playing. Segue type and duration set by DAD.CFG parameters as described below. SYSTEM '' Leaves DAD to run specified DOS command then returns. Depending on nature of DOS command, audio interruption may occur. WAIT Allows pauses to be placed between DCL commands in command cuts. DAD.CFG FILE CHANGES There are several new entries in the DAD.CFG file: (note: DAD.CFG for network users is \dad\files\LOCATION.cfg where location may be something like DAD1, DAD2, ONAIR, PROD) COMx_INFO = Used to initialize each comm port used for serial communication. SEND_TEXT_x_IO Sets which comm port to use for send text channels A thru D. BOARDx_REF_LEVEL = <-26 to 26> Sets balanced analog reference level for each DSP board. Value is used differently by different boards. Consult Tech Support. INTERRUPT_SEGUE_TYPE = <1 thru 4> Superplay segue type. Corresponds to mix button # in segue editor. INTERRUPT_SEGUE_TRANSITION = Superplay segue transition duration in decimal seconds. SLIST_TEXT_HEIGHT = Sets spacing between playlist lines displayed in PBK machines. 16 is standard, 32 is double spaced, 48 is triple spaced, etc. SIMPLFIED DAD.BAT FILE Many of the DOS environment variables used by DAD have been eliminated from the DAD.BAT file. For stand alone workstations these are now being handled internally. For network workstations, the only variable that need be set is LOCATION which must be set uniquely within each workstations AUTOEXEC.BAT file. All other assignment is handled by the System Login Script (you must use ENCO's suggested login script). ENHANCED REBUILD/BACKUP UTILITY The latest version of ENCO's REBUILD.EXE (7-19-94 5:09p) automatically copies CUTS.DBF to the \DAD\FILES\BACKUP directory along with doing more extensive "clean up" operations on the Library database. Files copied to the backup directory are kept for each day of the week thereby keeping backup files no more than 1 day old. This does not replace the need to do timely backups manually, but should only be relied upon incase of emergency. ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ DAD 5.0c REFINEMENTS ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ EDITOR The difficulities that network users were experiencing with REWRITE AUDIO (specifically ENTIRE CUT rewrites), has been corrected. ASPLAY LOG The asplay log is now stored as a dBASE III compatable file which is named by the "set asplay=" line of the DAD.BAT file. A single file may be used for multiple workstations or each may have its own by specifying unique asplay settings for each workstation. ASPLAY logs may be printed or sent to a file using the LIBRARY/MAINT/GENERATE REPORTS/ASPLAY LOGS feature. This will display a pop-up window allowing you to choose which ASPLAY LOG to report. The format of the report is determined by the \DAD\ASPLAY.RPG report generator file included with the DAD 5.0 update. A utility has also been added to purge the currently open ASPLAY log. This allows a log to be emptied periodically to keep reports shorter and more manageble. See the new LIBRARY/MAINT/PURGE ASPLAY LOG button. NEW REPORTS Using the new LIBRARY\MAINT\GENERATE REPORTS\EXCEPTION LISTING button will produce two reports. The first will indicate what cuts in the library have no corresponding .FIL in the \CUTS directory. The second will indicate .FIL files in the \CUTS directory that have no "parent" records in the DAD library. NEW CUT DELETE PROCEDURE When deleting cuts in the Library, the user now is "marking" the cuts he wants deleted. This speeds up the process as well as allows for "undeleting". When done "marking" the cuts, use the new PURGE button to "really" erase those marked cuts. The purge process can take up to 45 seconds to complete on large libraries and may effect playback. Time your use of purge appropriately. NEW TOUCH MODE/MOUSE MODE TOGGLE You may now change from touch mode to mouse mode and back without exiting the program. This is accomplished from the keyboard by holding the SHIFT key then hitting the F10 key. NOTE: You must have initially started the program in TOUCH mode for this to be active. It immediately "marks" the highlited cut as DELETE. Hitting DELETE on a cut that is already marked, will "undelete" it. I.E. it will remove the DELETE mark from the kill date field no longer making it subject to deletion by the PURGE button. NEW ASPLAY PURGE FUNCTIONALITY The user can now choose which asplay log he wants to purge via the LIBRARY/MAINTENANCE/GENERATE REPORTS/ASPLAY LOG/PURGE button. HOTKEYS You can now between the two lists of PLAYLIST MODIFY for up and down arrow control of the list. This is also available in RECORD LIST. Many "hotkeys" have been added to windows and pop-ups everywhere. An "obvious" use of ALT-key sequences will do popular functions. A complete list is being compiled and will be in a later readme file. Till then, we encourage the use OVERWRITE and REWRITE OF CUTS NOW MORE INTELLIGENT When changing drive locations for a re-recording or rewritten cut will no longer leave a "dangling parent" cut on the original drive. ALT-C (touch calibration) CORRECTION Hitting ALT-C multiple times while already in calibrate mode now handled correctly.
